Rail Runs Through

Rail Runs Through

This work connects the gradually buried platform, railway tracks, and 5.3K stone mark with the urban green corridor of the Taoyuan-Linkou cycling path to form a community. By keeping the memories of the days when railways acted as an important vehicle of the economic development in Taoyuan, it aims to pass on the stories along the Taolin railway cherished in the memories of residents in the communities. It takes the R64 Engine, one of the locomotive engines similar to the ones operating on the route, as the model and then keeps a part of the details and makes appropriate artistic transformation on others. The juxtaposition of the real and fictional, light and heavy, simple and complicated, as well as natural environment and industrial materials infuses the platform and its surroundings with the minimalist framework and abstract lines, delivering the concept of landscape art of focusing on natural sceneries and humanistic objects.

Stéphane CIES Cloteau is an architect-turned-artist and most of his works are made with steel structure. This work in display, a joint creation between him and a Taiwanese team which is accomplished with the difficulties in the pandemic, smoothly combines sculpture, architecture and natural environment to convey his conscientiousness about history and culture as well as his enthusiasm to arts. During the process of creation, the artist and team viewed the environment of the 5.3K of the Taolin Railway and the collective memories along the route as one of the collaborators in the hope that this highlighted piece would remind the spectators to co-exist  and share prosperity with the environment in the post-epidemic spring.
