Bamboo Flow

Bamboo Flow

Bamboo Flow showcases a dynamic surface with flowing curves. Pre-bent bamboos construct the main lines as well as the overall structure of the work. Without any additional structural bodies, this work challenges the traditional bamboo craftsmanship by using the digital design process in the field of architecture to imitate the natural lines presented by bending and blending bamboo materials, aiming to infuse modern design vocabularies into traditional bamboo material and to integrate the texture and modern style of bamboos. Flexible nets with different levels of tensile strength are used in the in-between spaces to create semi-hollowed-out surface. In the lower areas near the ground, high-tensile nets are used to create opportunities for bodily interactions so that viewers may sit or lie on the nets, while in the higher area, low-tensile nets form a roof resembling a pavilion where people can take a break underneath. Flowing bamboos invited audiences to stay and have intimate interactions.

The creative team of the Graduate Institute of Architecture of National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) is consisted of Associate Professor HSU Pei-hsien and four graduate students, WANG Yu-Chun, LIN Kai-En, HU Ming-Jie, and LI Yeh-Ting. The NYCU Graduate Institute of Architecture has been dedicated to innovative design integrating technology and humanity. HSU Pei-Hsien, the team leader, has actively devoted himself to constructions with natural materials in recent years to combine design and practical work and lead students to actually carry out actions in the society. The four graduate students also uphold the principle of interdisciplinary creations to combine the architectural construction and installation art.
